PAYING RESPECTS TO OUR FRIEND JIMMY BALOGH...

It was just last Saturday that I was in Hazlet, New Jersey, attending an emotional memorial ceremony for Jimmy Balogh, a longtime friend of our Drag Racing Underground family, who recently passed away at the age of 57. Jimmy was an even longer time friend of John Gill. It's Gill who still has memories of Jimmy's mom walking Jimmy and his younger brother to school all the way back in the first grade. Gill also went to Jr. High and High School with Jimmy. He was a star running athlete in High School as well as an exceptional student. Jimmy went on to Middlesex and Cook College and landed a successful chemist career with Exxon/Mobile. He also served as a volunteer fireman and did a long stint as a prominent dance club disc jockey. Unfortunately he later suffered a severely traumatic brain injury when struck by a car. Gill reconnected with Jimmy about seven years ago, and eventually came to the realization that Jimmy needed a helping hand. Gill reached out to Jimmy's adult son (Jimmy Jr.) from Jimmy's first marriage, and his son heroically stepped up to the plate, finding his dad a nice place to live, and getting his dad the necessary medical attention he needed. Both Gill and I would take Jimmy on outings and day trips to Old Bridge Township Raceway Park, because Jimmy was a drag racing fan -- he was a drag racing fan long before he suffered his brain injury, from a time years ago when he drove a hot rod Chevy Nova. Below is a photograph from a couple years back of Jimmy and yours truly at Raceway Park. Jimmy had a happy time at the drag strip. You can clearly see he was in good spirits and enjoying himself. It's really tough losing him. But we're all thankful for the time we had to spend with Jimmy. Rest In Peace our dear friend...
