Former longtime Atco Dragway owner Joseph J. "Joe Sway" Swierczynski Sr. passed away. Joe was 67 years of age. He owned the south Jersey drag strip for decades. Before he bought it, the first time he went to the strip, he "snuck in" by hiding in the trunk of a friend's car-- I always thought of that as being a funny story about the man who would eventually buy the place. Admittedly, Joe used to occasionally bust my chops when I'd go to Atco, working for Drag Racing Underground, because he knew of my somewhat strong bias in favor of Raceway Park, and he was kind of right about that, but I did tell him that I did appreciate the effort that he put into running Atco, so we were cool with each other. We had a mutual respect and got along. And I will testify that Joe worked awful hard and long hours to maintain Atco Dragway, and keep the doors open when local government and activists started giving him a hard time in the late 80s. Like I always say, running a drag strip sure ain't no picnic, it takes lots of dedication -- and Joe sure possessed dedication for his race track. A viewing will be held Tuesday, January 9th from 6-9pm at the Leroy P. Wooster Funeral Home 441 White Horse Pike, Atco, NJ. Joe really loved dogs and cats, so in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Jersey State Animal Rescue PO Box 609, Atco, NJ 08004. My condolences to all in Joe's family. Rest In Peace.
